Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Wakefield in 1938 at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. She was experimenting with a chocolate bar, intending to create a chocolate cookie. Instead, the chocolate chunks melted only partially, giving rise to the delicious treat we know today as chocolate chip cookies.
