Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) was a landmark Supreme Court case that upheld racial segregation under the "separate but equal" doctrine. Homer Plessy, an African American, was arrested for sitting in a whites-only train car. The ruling legitimized Jim Crow laws, allowing institutionalized racial discrimination in public facilities across the U.S.
