Gitlow v. New York (1925) was a landmark Supreme Court case that established the principle of incorporating the First Amendment's free speech clause against state governments. Benjamin Gitlow was arrested for publishing a socialist manifesto advocating for socialism through strikes and class action. The Court ruled that states could limit speech if it poses a "dangerous tendency."
