Siddhartha Gautama, known as Buddha, was born in the 5th or 6th century BCE in Lumbini, Nepal. He was a prince who renounced his luxurious life in search of enlightenment. After years of meditation and understanding the nature of suffering, he attained enlightenment and shared his teachings, forming the foundation of Buddhism.
